Comenzaremos nuestro viaje en la sección Artistas del mundo conociendo artistas de todas partes del planeta. Hoy entrevistaremos  a  María Belén Medina Contreras oriunda de Pataguas Cerro, Pichidegua, Chile. Con 28 años trabaja en la casona de la cultura de su ciudad natal dictando talleres de arte para niños.

¿Qué edad tenías cuando comenzaste a dibujar?

1- He dibujado desde que tengo memoria, aunque empecé a ser consciente de esto cuando tenía unos 7 años y debido a una enfermedad estuve gran parte de mi infancia en hospitales y aislada en mi hogar, esta situación me llevó a refugiarme en el arte, la imaginación y todos los aspectos creativos que tenía a mi alcance. Debido a mi habilidad, que considero que es natural, mis padres notaron la gran atracción que tenía por la pintura y el dibujo fomentando así este “talento” que jamás imaginé que se convertiría en mi trabajo y vocación. Eso deja claro lo importante que es fomentar el arte y la creatividad en los niños y niñas, ya que muchas veces los adultos no imaginan el inmenso potencial que pueden desarrollar sus hijos si cuentan con apoyo y motivación de parte de ellos.

¿Qué significa dibujar para ti?

2- El dibujo, la pintura, y el arte en general significa la mayor expresión de delicadeza, elegancia y perfección que existe, por lo cual intento transmitir todos esos puntos en mi obra pictórica. Antes no tenía claro cuál quería que fuese mi legado u ocupación, ya que el arte en Chile no tiene la importancia ni el respeto que podemos apreciar en otros países. Como profesión u oficio.

Básicamente atreverse a ser artista en Chile es un acto de rebeldía y un salto al vacío sin expectativas, y bueno, estoy tan segura de mi misma y de todo lo que puedo proyectar como artista que simplemente quise seguir mi destino sin importar a dónde me llevaría ese sendero.

En lo personal, el dibujo, la pintura y el arte en todas sus aristas significa el sueño de mi vida y mi misión en este mundo. Más aún cuando descubrí que puedo fusionar dos de mis mayores pasiones que es el retrato de la figura humana y el mundo de la música. Me hace enormemente feliz haber seguido mi instinto y hacer del arte mi vida entera. Soy bastante exigente conmigo misma al retratar ya que al ser pinturas a partir de una foto no existe el margen de error, muchas veces me ha frustrado tal nivel de exigencia conmigo misma, pero a medida que pasa el tiempo y voy comparando el avance que he experimentado, a base de ensayo y error, me doy cuenta que el arte es un trabajo que requiere constancia y disciplina. Y el aprendizaje de este jamás termina.

¿Recuerdas el primer dibujo que hiciste en tu niñez?

 Específicamente no recuerdo cuál fue mi primer dibujo, ya que como mencioné anteriormente el arte ha sido una constante desde que tengo noción. Lo que si, siempre he dibujado rostros, figuras y facciones humanas, siendo mi principal obsesión la profundidad en la mirada y que los rasgos transmitan una sensación hipnotizante. Así que supongo que mi primer dibujo debió ser algo relacionado con eso.

¿Que requisitos debe tener un buen dibujante?

 Es relativo lo que necesita cada artista para encontrar su sello distintivo ya que el arte es subjetivo, viene en todos los colores y formas. Pero en el caso de dibujo, más aún del dibujo como retrato, el mayor requisito es el trabajo pulido y detallista, ya que hasta el más mínimo detalle puede cambiar una facción por completo. El dibujo artístico y anatómico requiere de una disciplina y precisión inmensa. Un buen dibujante necesita constancia, la capacidad de analizar su obra objetivamente para buscar esos errores que puede que no le de ese toque magistral que necesita el retrato para impactar. Quizá el retrato humano sea cosa de grandes maestros, de épocas renacentistas, por lo tanto está un poco pasado de moda. Mi objetivo como artista es retratar la emoción en la mirada y las expresiones corporales y faciales con la mayor similitud posible.

Hemos vistos dibujos  tuyos de músicos. ¿Qué es lo que más te inspira?

Lo que más me inspira es la música. Ver sus colores, formas, proporciones, lo cual automáticamente me trae una imagen a la cabeza.

Personalmente creo que el arte y la música van de la mano, junto con esto busco retribuir la inspiración que entrega una canción, disco o banda en forma de pintura o dibujo. Me di cuenta que lo que más me apasiona es dibujar músicos o bandas que me han inspirado y acompañado, retratando en forma de homenaje a la sinestesia que sus obras me provocan. Amo el rock, en especial el Rock Progresivo.

Bandas y músicos como King Crimson, Robert Fripp, The Beatles, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, y muchos otros artistas han hecho que mi mente estalle en mil colores y formas. El nivel artístico musical tan pulido y detallista que tienen los músicos señalados son mi mayor inspiración, queriendo proyectar el mismo nivel de calidad que ellos, pero en mi área que es la pintura.

También mi objetivo es rescatar estas bandas y músicos de otras épocas y presentarlos a nuevas generaciones a través de la pintura, recopilar todo el trabajo que hicieron en una imagen a modo de homenaje. La música transgrede y el arte también, se complementan.

¿A dónde te gustaría que te lleve el dibujo?

Quiero que el arte, la pintura y el dibujo me lleven a lugares insospechados, quiero que me lleve a distintas galerías del mundo también (un sueño algo ambicioso, el cual no me avergüenza admitir aunque se vea como una fantasía). Quiero enseñar todo lo que he aprendido en solitario a nuevas generaciones con interés y habilidad artística también.

Pero principalmente quiero que mi obra se conozca y recorra el mundo, para ser honesta, ya que me siento una artista desde las entrañas.

Por ahora necesito seguir mejorando mi técnica y experimentando con otras, ya que el arte es un eterno aprendizaje. Mi sueño más ambicioso es exponer en galerías internacionales y nacionales también, acercar a nuevas generaciones a estos estilos musicales, que conozcan su historia y legado a través de las pinturas que hago. El arte es un amante insospechado y exigente, nunca sabes a dónde te llevará… Pero lo importante es vivirlo sin miedos, expectativas o dudas, ya que más que un trabajo es un estilo de vida.

Today we will meet the artist María Belén Medina Contreras, a native of Pataguas Cerro, Pichidegua, Chile. At the age of 28, he works in the house of culture in his hometown, teaching art workshops for children.

How old were you when you started drawing?

I have drawn since I can remember, although I began to be aware of this when I was about 7 years old and due to an illness I spent a large part of my childhood in hospitals and isolated in my home, this situation led me to take refuge in art, the imagination and all the creative aspects that I had at my fingertips. Due to my ability, which I consider to be natural, my parents noticed the great attraction I had for painting and drawing, thus fostering this "talent" that I never imagined would become my job and vocation. This makes it clear how important it is to promote art and creativity in children, since many times adults do not imagine the immense potential that their children can develop if they have support and motivation from them.

What does drawing mean to you?

Drawing, painting, and art in general means the greatest expression of delicacy, elegance and perfection that exists, which is why I try to convey all these points in my pictorial work. Before I was not clear about what I wanted my legacy or occupation to be, since art in Chile does not have the importance or respect that we can appreciate in other countries. As a profession or trade.

Basically daring to be an artist in Chile is an act of rebellion and a leap into the void without expectations, and well, I'm so sure of myself and everything I can project as an artist that I simply wanted to follow my destiny no matter where it would lead me. that trail.

Personally, drawing, painting and art in all its edges means the dream of my life and my mission in this world. Even more so when I discovered that I can merge two of my greatest passions, which is the portrait of the human figure and the world of music. It makes me enormously happy to have followed my instincts and made art my whole life. I am quite demanding of myself when I portray since being paintings from a photo there is no margin of error, many times such a level of demand with myself has frustrated me, but as time passes and I am comparing the progress that I have Experienced, based on trial and error, I realize that art is a job that requires perseverance and discipline. And the learning of this never ends.

Do you remember the first drawing you made in your childhood?

Specifically, I do not remember what my first drawing was, since as I mentioned previously, art has been a constant since I have a notion. What if, I have always drawn human faces, figures and features, my main obsession being the depth in the gaze and that the features convey a mesmerizing sensation. So I guess my first drawing must have been something related to that.

What requirements should a good draftsman have?

It is relative what each artist needs to find their distinctive stamp since art is subjective, it comes in all colors and shapes. But in the case of drawing, even more so of drawing as a portrait, the greatest requirement is polished and detailed work, since even the smallest detail can change a faction completely. Artistic and anatomical drawing requires immense discipline and precision. A good draftsman needs constancy, the ability to analyze his work objectively to look for those errors that may not give him that masterful touch that the portrait needs to make an impact. Perhaps the human portrait is a thing of great masters, of Renaissance times, therefore it is a bit old-fashioned. My goal as an artist is to portray the emotion in the gaze and the body and facial expressions with the greatest possible similarity.

We have seen your drawings of musicians. What inspires you the most?

What inspires me the most is music. See their colors, shapes, proportions, which automatically brings an image to mind.

Personally, I believe that art and music go hand in hand, along with this I seek to give back the inspiration that a song, album or band delivers in the form of a painting or drawing. I realized that what I am most passionate about is drawing musicians or bands that have inspired and accompanied me, portraying as a tribute to the synesthesia that their works provoke in me. I love rock, especially Progressive Rock.

Bands and musicians like King Crimson, Robert Fripp, The Beatles, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, and many other artists have made my mind explode in a thousand colors and shapes. The musical artistic level so polished and detailed that the aforementioned musicians have are my greatest inspiration, wanting to project the same level of quality as them, but in my area, which is painting.

Also my goal is to rescue these bands and musicians from other times and present them to new generations through painting, to collect all the work they did in an image as a tribute. Music transgresses and art too, they complement each other.

Where would you like the drawing to take you?

 I want art, painting and drawing to take me to unexpected places, I want it to take me to different galleries in the world as well (a somewhat ambitious dream, which I am not ashamed to admit even if it looks like a fantasy). I want to teach all that I have learned alone to new generations with interest and artistic ability as well.

But mainly I want my work to be known and travel the world, to be honest, since I feel like an artist from the guts.

For now I need to continue improving my technique and experimenting with others, since art is an eternal learning. My most ambitious dream is to exhibit in international and national galleries as well, to bring new generations closer to these musical styles, that they know their history and legacy through the paintings that I do. Art is an unsuspected and demanding lover, you never know where it will take you ... But the important thing is to live it without fear, expectations or doubts, since more than a job it is a lifestyle.
