Castillo de Sohail - FUENGIROLA
Se encuentra sobre una pequeña colina, a 28 metros sobre el nivel del mar y en plena desembocadura del rió Fuengirola, en el municipio de Fuengirola, Málaga, España.
Su finalidad era vigilar este
tramo del litoral y proteger esta zona de aguada para navegación por el estrecho de Gibraltar,
sin olvidar su función albergue y refugio de los viajeros o comerciantes
transitaban por la región.
En el año 956 sobre las ruinas de una población romana Suel, un califa
cordobés, mando a construir una ciudadela.
En el siglo XII, los almorávides
levantan un recinto definitivo con planta irregular adaptándolo a los
desniveles del terreno. En 1485 el
castillo fue tomado por los cristianos en plena ofensiva contra el reino de
nazarí de Granada. A partir de ese
momento el recinto ira readaptando su arquitectura a su fisonomía actual.
En 1553 sufrió algunas
modificaciones con el paso del tiempo dedo si progresivo deterioro, el obispo de
Málaga fray Bernardo Manrique, con ayuda de la corona van a proceder a
financiar las remodelaciones como por ejemplo la eliminación de una de sus
torres de levante para la construcción de una plataforma para el emplazamiento
de cañones o con un muro aspillero, tras su voladura por el ejército
de Napoleón en la guerra de la independencia.
En el siglo XVII un feroz
incendio destruye las viviendas y cuarteles de la plaza, afectado una de las
torres del recinto. El costo de su reconstrucción estuvo a cargo del alcalde
Pedro Moriana Osorio, cuya madre fue enterrada en la iglesia del recinto.
Con el transcurso de los años el
castillo pierde su función militar, procediéndose a una subasta pública,
pasando por un periodo de abandono total.
En 1981 fue declarado monumento
histórico y cinco años más tarde fue vendido por sus propietarios a una empresa constructora, siendo adquirido
en 1988 por el ayuntamiento de Fuengirola.
Las obras realizadas estos
últimos años por la escuela Taller han
posibilitado la recuperación del
castillo. Esta recuperación ha sido bien acogida, lo demuestra la cantidad de
público que lo visita

In 1981 it was declared a historical monument and five years later it was sold by its owners to a construction company, being acquired in 1988 by the Fuengirola city council.
The works carried out in recent years by the Taller school have made possible the recovery of the castle. This recovery has been well received, as shown by the amount of public that visits it.
