TODAY WE TRAVEL VIRTUALLY TO MEET GERARDO LABARCA, VENEZUELAN ARTIST LIVING IN CANADA

How was your interest in art born?

From a very young age I always liked to paint, any time was good to draw. My friends always asked me to paint the covers of their notebooks. Of course, at that time I was not aware that those little drawings I made were predestining what my artistic career would be today.

Let's say that the notion of Art started a little late in my life, I will emigrate to Canada at the age of 21, my learning of the French language as a process of integration to my new country, led me to a career in the hospitality industry, where from being a dishwasher in my early years, I became the owner directing my own gastronomic restaurants for more than 20 years, at the same time, I made some paintings in my little free time, which decorated the walls of my house. Very few people knew about my talent, since I only painted to drain my stress, dreaming one day that once I retired, painting would be my hobbies.

What factors marked your path?

As the years passed working in my restaurants, I saw less and less the possibility of dedicating myself to painting full time, my days were more and more full of responsibilities and a frustration began to fill my soul. At 47 years old, despite having had many awards in the area of haute cuisine, I did not feel complete, so one day I decided to completely change my career and dedicate myself full time to painting with the objective of selling my creations ready to eat. to make a living from it, which I achieved as soon as I began this new stage of my life as a visual artist.

Who are your artistic references?

I like figurative art and composition in some of my works you can see the influence of the great Gustav Klimt Dans in the golden period, Frida Kahlo has also played an important role because of the way she sees herself in her self-portraits and her compositions.

Which of your works is your favourite? why?

I made a painting of Charlie Chaplin 72x48in, in fact, behind this painting there is another, which I had done to place him in my last MEZCLA restaurant, when I decided to invest all my time in art I covered it by painting it completely white and so I started a new work that would represent a new beginning in my life. Of course, I still had no idea where to start, so I just painted a large portrait of Chaplin, in black and white, just a white background, where the painting that was before could be seen in relief. I looked at my painting every day, thinking that something was missing and it was listening to Manu Chao's music that a revelation came to my mind, putting all kinds of details, collages, tones, metallic effects and whatever else went through my mind, to the image of the music of this artist that combines different sounds in a single composition and that is how one day I was pleased with the final result, thus marking my style and artistic process. It is worth saying that I never had training in art so I learned little by little how to use materials I didn't know how to apply them, etc. This CHALIE CHAPLIN painting today belongs to my private collection, remembering when I saw it, as I had that day, the courage to change my path and to believe that my dreams would come true.

How has the pandemic influenced your creations?

I must say that my career as an artist developed in the midst of a pandemic, since just a year before it all started, I had already left the hospitality industry. So it was at this time that paintings became known. In these last three years I have had a full-time immersion putting my creativity to its maximum expression, occupying my time not only painting but also promoting my art, since until now I have carried out my career independently without agents, or galleries that represent me, social media have played a fundamental role since all my paintings have been sold through these platforms. I think that, when the pandemic arrives, people spend much more time on the networks, so this worked a lot in my favor.

What sensitizes you?

Life in general, I am very vulnerable to all the things that surround me, although I consider myself a strong person, through my social networks I take the opportunity to pass on a message: BELIEVE IN YOURSELF and NEVER GIVE UP. I also take advantage of the visibility that I am getting for creating awareness of the importance of nature and the environment. Enhance the fundamental values and give thanks to life for the luck of having it, take advantage of every moment to work for our dreams and fulfill them.
